Using Group and Group Password

  • Once you launch the VPN client, open the "Properties" for your connection.
  • Click on the Authentication tab. Enter the group and the group password in the appropriate fields. Save this information in "Properties." If you choose to save this information, you will not need to enter the group and group password every time you reestablish your connection.
  • Click "Connect." At the prompt, enter your Penn State Access Account userid and password.

Installing the VPN Client under Windows XP

When installing the VPN client in the XP Pro environment, the "uninstall Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" dialog box may appear. While you cannot uninstall ICS, you can disable it. To disable ICS, do the following:

  • Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services
  • Double-click on "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and change the startup type to disabled.

Connecting to the UDrive From Home or Office

For information about connecting from home or an office location using Windows 2000 or XP, please see the instructions provided by Classroom and Lab Computing, in Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), a unit of Information Technology Services (ITS).

Noted Problems

Windows XP

Common problem 1: Some users have noted that when they attempt to install the VPN client on a Windows XP machine, a message appears that requests the installation of Microsoft Dialup Networking Version 1.2 or greater. Then, the installation procedure appears to terminate.

This error message may be the result of clicking on the .exe icon to perform the install; however, Microsoft does not list this driver for Windows XP Home. It is recommended that users install the VPN software by using the Start - -›Run" window.

Common problem 2: Some users have noted the warning message "Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP" while installing the VPN client. The suggested solution is to click <continue>. Additional information is available via the Cisco's product release notes regarding warning messages.
