Major File Backup Service Upgrade and Outage Scheduled for July 29 - August 1, 2006updated on July 31, 2006. Beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, Information Technology Services (ITS) will perform a major upgrade to the hardware and software that supports its Distributed File Backup Service, sometimes referred to as TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager). The upgrade will be completed by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1. The time frame of the upgrade has been chosen based on statistics that indicate the least impact to the TSM user community. During the upgrade time frame, users who subscribe to the TSM service will be able to restore any data that has been backed up as of July 29 at 6:00 a.m.; however, users of this service will not be able to back up and/or archive data during the upgrade. After the upgrade, users will be able to perform backups, archives, restores, etc. of data, as usual. Users will not need to make any changes to their TSM clients as a result of the upgrade. In addition, TSM customers should enjoy a considerable increase in future backup and restore capabilities as a result of the upgrade. This maintenance is being performed as a follow-up to a hardware failure, experienced within the last month, which eliminated system redundancy and reduced the performance associated with these services. Questions regarding this upgrade/outage should be directed to backup@psu.edu. Information about the TSM service is found via the TSM Web page. |
