Networking and Advanced Systems
The Networking and Advanced Systems Group designs, installs, manages, and monitors many of the servers that support the ACCESS Project. This group is also responsible for the ASET's advanced internal and external network connections.
Several upgrades were made during 1999-2000 to the following networking services:
- Dial-up Support Services: ASET has increased the total number of digital modems from 576 to 2,016. As a result, most of the slower speed (V.34) modems were decommissioned. On an average weekday, 68,499 calls are made to digital modems and 16,933 are made to analog modems.
- E-mail Services: To ensure that only valid Penn State e-mail is sent, the way in which outgoing mail on smtp.psu.edu is processed has been changed. Unauthorized users cannot relay e-mail via smtp.psu.edu. This service upgrade was deployed by using a new version of Web Sphere Dispatcher and the Distributed File System (DFS). ASET e-mail servers averaged 1.9 million mail transactions on an average weekday. The average message size is about 39K. On an average day, 50,781 unique users check their mail.
- Internet2 Applications to the Desktop: ASET upgraded its network infrastructure to support Internet2 (I2) Applications to the Desktop. Previously, only a small number of Computer Building workstations were able to support this type of networking. Approximately 50 percent of the connections are now I2-capable.
- LISTSERV upgrade: LISTSERV was moved from the decommissioned PSUVM to a Y2K compliant SP node (lists.psu.edu). As a result, several new features were added to LISTSERV, such as a Web page interface.
- Router Upgrade: ASET upgraded its router to provide one that is I2-capable and able to scale with new higher demand work loads.
- Server Upgrades: Servers such as smtp.psu.edu, psu.edu, www.psu.edu, www.personal.psu.edu, and www.worldcampus.psu.edu have been upgraded to newer, faster SP nodes.
- Web Services Support:Approximately 4,293 inquiries to the Webmaster mailing list, webmaster@psu.edu, were answered during 1999.
- Web space directories: 31,792 Web directories were supported on www.personal.psu.edu during 1999. As of February 15, 2000, a total of 34,249 Web directories are supported on www.personal.psu.edu.
